Wichita Mountains Texas Longhorn Cattle

The herds at the refuge are wild, not destined for the stockyards and slaughterhouses like their domesticated brethren. They are also somewhat surprisingly a bit more menacing than the larger bison. Whenever I am stopped by the cattle, several always seem to be watching me in a way that generates a justifiable feeling of wariness about approaching any closer than a few dozen yards, in contrast to the bison which will pass within 15 feet and not even seem to be paying attention to you. (Nonetheless ... not a good idea to approach the bison too closely either.)

This time around the adults seemed to pretty much ignore me. The young 'uns were the watchers now, both of me and of the lone bison nearby who flopped down on his side on the ground a few times, to the seeming bemusement of the curious calf.
