Wichita Mountains Bison

The first babies I saw at the refuge were the bison, and I'm sure I smiled wide inside my helmet at the surprise. They were so adorable.

The bison seem be a little more flexible in their herd mentality than the longhorns in that while the longhorns are rarely seen off alone, the bison were sometimes in herds of a couple dozen, other times they are off all alone.

A few times I got to see a bison flopping on its side, kicking its legs up in the air. I'm not entirely sure what that's about, but I suspect it might be related to getting ride of the thick, heavy winter coat when warmer weather has arrived.
